Cube Controller MKII - Puzzle box

This project is an attempt to continue some work I was doing last semester with motion detection/gestural interaction. Rather than rely on several independent systems to provide a user with an experience, I decided combine controller and dispaly into one device. It will eventually be some kind of rotation puzzle.

I have utilized a slightly more complicated motion detection system than those in use with previous projects. A Nintendo Wii-Chuck, suspended at the center of the enclosure, allows me to detect and (eventually) track movement and rotation of the controller in real time. Tilt switch assemblies, mounted on each face of the enclosure, are wired and positioned in a way to allow for an accurate and low-tech means of determining controller orientation.

The sides of the cube are lit with BlinkM, a serial controlled, 24bit “smart” LED. They communicate to the Arduino through the same protocol as the Wii-Chuck, TWI/I2C. I only have four of these things due to an unfortunate limit in supply (EDIT: They are now back in stock).

The cube currently has three functions:

  • Standby: The BlinkM’s go dark when no motion is detected for a specific period of time.
  • Unlock: A procedure in which the user must illuminate each side of cube by rotating it. Must be done each time cube is brought out of standby. i.e. touching the cube
  • Free Rotation: After unlock procedure is successfully completed, change in orientation causes a direct change in color. XYZ position corresponds directly with RGB value.

I intend to add two more BlinkM’s, sound, and further develop it’s program to include motion tracking, and increasingly complex procedures. I’m looking into a bigger enclosure, and better light diffusion.

This project would not have been possible without the fantastic and inspiring work by TodBot.

Forgive the bad metal.

I’m still waiting to receive presentation day photos from my professor.
